Quick verdict
A compact AM and FM pocket radio with NOAA weather monitoring and strong AM performance. If you do not need weather alerts, the Sangean DT-200X is another pocket option.
The Sangean DT-400W is a small yellow AM and FM pocket radio with NOAA weather monitoring. It is a good fit for a glove box, a go bag or a walk around the neighborhood.
What you get
The DT-400W has PLL synthesized digital tuning, 19 presets across AM, FM and weather channels reachable with a My Favorite button, and a button lock that stops accidental changes. NOAA Public Alert monitoring keeps running even when the radio is off. The built-in speaker has Dynamic Bass Boost, and there is a stereo headphone output.
What I like
AM reception is a strength, and several owners say it beats other pocket radios they have tried. The controls are simple enough to use by feel, and the button lock is a thoughtful feature for a radio that lives in a pocket or a bag. The bright yellow case is easy to find in a drawer or a dark room. A similar pocket radio, the DT-200X, is also on this site.
Things to know
A small speaker limits the sound, and some owners say pocket radios from other brands sound fuller. A few buyers were unhappy with how the weather alert works, and one listener in a hilly area with weak signals found reception difficult. If weather alerts are your main goal, read the manual first so you know how to set up and use the alert function.
Bottom line
For a compact radio with strong AM performance and weather monitoring, the DT-400W is an easy pick. If you do not need weather alerts, the DT-200X on this site is another pocket option.
